US Bishops Set To Issue Statement On Need For Immigration Reform

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops is drafting a statement urging the government to urgently reform its stance on immigration. “This is a time when newcomers [to the US] are fleeing violence or persecution or cannot find a livelihood in their own country,” Archbishop Gomez wrote, adding that the Trump administration has taken several steps on immigration that demand input from the Church because they “have a direct impact on our pastoral care of immigrants, refugees, and DACA youth," according to CNA

“It is not the proper time to return 300,000 individuals” to their home countries, Bishop Vasquez said of the Trump administration's decision to recind the DACA immigration programme. “ A longer term legislative solution for these brothers and sisters” is necessary, he added.
