Christian Minister Openly Wears Cross In Saudi Arabia, Despite Viscous Persecution

Nov 14, 2017 by Will Maule

A Christian priest has gone against the status quo during a trip to Saudi Arabia, openly wearing a cross around his neck. Saudi Arabia bases all its laws on a strict interpretation of Sharia Islamic law. It is an incredibly oppressive place to live as a Christian. Items not belonging to the religion of Islam are strictly prohibited. This includes Bibles, crucifixes, statues, carvings, items with religious symbols, and others.

Bishop Boulos Matar is part of a delegation accompanying Lebanon’s Maronite Catholic Patriarch Beshara Al Rai on an official visit to Saudi Arabia. Matar was spotted wearing his cross during a press conference, according to Bloomberg.com. Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is said to be modernizing the Islamic state. The 32-year-old has said he wishes to change the religious basis of Saudi society - stamping out extremism and ushering in a “moderate” version of Islam.
