Archbishop Heads To Russia For Meetings With 'Senior Political Figures'

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is heading to Russia for a number of important meetings with 'senior political figures.' He is in Moscow to meet with senior Russian politicians and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill. The visit is somewhat controversial following British Prime Minister Theresa May's recent comments accusing Russia of meddling in elections and perpetuating fake news stories.

When polarizing figure Patriarch Kirill came to London last year to meet with religious leaders, he suggested that Church figures could be used as back channels for political dialogue.

"When at the beginning of the eighteenth century diplomatic relations between the two countries [Russia and Britain] were broken off, the rector of our church here in London carried out a state and diplomatic mission. And this would happen every time when relations between the two countries became difficult," he said in one of his sermons.
