Alabama Church Faces Backlash After Sign Compares Roy Moore To Jesus

Living Way Ministries, a church in Alabama church, has suffered a social media backlash after changing the message on their lawn sign to compare controversial Senate candidate Roy Moore, accused of several counts of sexual abuse, to Jesus Christ. According to photos from the local news, the sign read, “They falsely accused Jesus! Vote Roy Moore.” A spokesperson for the church reported to WHNT-TV that a member of the church posted the message without approval from the pastor, who had it taken down two days later.

According to the Huffington Post, the sign’s message may have violated Internal Revenue Service rules restricting political speech by churches and other nonprofits. 501(a) and 501(c)(3) organizations, such as many churches, are prohibited from “participating in, or intervening in any political campaign, in favor of or against any candidate for public office.” However, such organizations are allowed to host forums including all candidates as well as take official stances on policy issues.

Moore has been accused by nine wom of sexual harassment and assault when he was in his 30s and they were as young as 14. Moore recently denied all accusations and called each accuser a liar, even those who substantiated their claims with evidence of their time with Moore.
