7 Trump Admin Accomplishments Christians Will Love

The first year of Donald Trump’s presidency has had its highs and lows, but evangelical Christians in particular have many presidential decisions and accomplishments to celebrate. Initially skeptical of Trump, evangelicals became one of his key voting bases. He made many campaign promises to evangelicals and conservatives, especially regarding abortion, religious liberty, and judicial nominations. Let’s explore the seven biggest victories the Christian community has had with the Trump administration in 2017:

  1. The Nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court
On the campaign trail, Trump promised to nominate originalist jurist to the Supreme Court. On January 31st, Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, a U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge known for siding with Hobby Lobby against the Obama administration in a contraception healthcare mandate case in 2013. Gorsuch was confirmed by the Senate in April.

  2. Signing An Executive Order Protecting Free Speech And Religious Liberty
In May, on the National Day Of Prayer, Trump, surrounded by a number of evangelical Christian leaders, signed an executive order on free speech and religious liberty. The order, among other things, urged the Department of Treasury and the IRS not to punish churches and 501(c)(3) nonprofits that speak about moral and political issues according to their faith.

  3. Justice Department Protection Of Religious Liberty
In October, Attorney General Jeff Sessions mirrored Trump’s May executive order by issuing sweeping guidance for all federal agencies regarding religious liberty. Sessions’ order stated that "the Free Exercise Clause protects not just the right to believe or the right to worship; it protects the right to perform or abstain from performing certain physical acts in accordance with one's beliefs." It also explained that individuals and organizations cannot lose their rights to religious liberty protections under federal law simply due to employment status or affiliation with any level government.

  4. Exempting Faith-Based Organizations From Obamacare’s Contraception Mandate
The Trump administration announced in October two new measures that would allow faith-based organizations, non- and for-profit, to maintain religious objection to coverage for contraceptives and abortifacients under the Department of Health and Human Services Obamacare mandate. The decision followed several lawsuits made by religious nonprofits (most notably Little Sisters of the Poor) against the Obama-era mandate which they felt compelled them to violate their deeply-held religious beliefs.

  5. Reversing Obama’s Public School Policies On Transgenderism
Conservatives and evangelicals were appalled when the Obama administration issued official guidance to public school districts encouraging male students who identify as females to be allowed into girls' bathrooms, locker rooms and showers, and vice versa. Many parents felt that Obama's policy flagrantly violated privacy rights. In February, however, Trump's Justice Department and Department of Education withdrew the guidance.
  6. Reversing Obama’s Order On Faith-Based Government Contractors
In March, Trump pulled President Obama’s executive order which prevented federal contracts from being awarded to businesses, faith-based companies and nonprofits whose hiring practices allegedly discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. President Trump initially chose to renew the order, but rescinded after the move was met with conservative criticism.

  7. Moving The U.S. Embassy In Israel To Jerusalem, Acknowledging Jerusalem As Its True Capital
In December, Trump announced that the U.S. would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move its embassy there from Tel Aviv. While the move has proven to be highly controversial, many American evangelicals are pleased with the move. James Dobson said of the decision, “I am greatly encouraged by this declaration and believe that America is always stronger when it stands firmly behind its allies, especially when it comes to the Jewish people and the land of Israel.”
