Total Depravity: Netflix's New Reality Show Pressures A Man To Commit Murder

Next week, Netflix will release The Push, a special reality show from “psychological illusionist” Derren Brown where a person will unwittingly participate in detailed, rehearsed simulation in which he will be pressured to commit murder. While no real lives are at stake and the simulations will be very elaborate hoaxes, the implications and consequences for the participant will be very real.

The Push raises several ethical questions as it shockingly illustrates human depravity. Relevant Magazine compared it to controversial psychological experiments such as the Stanford Prison experiment of 1971, which turned students against each other in a prisoners-and-guards scenario, and the Milgram experiment of 1961 in which participants used electro-shock on another participant in a similar authoritarian situation.
