AB 2943, California's "Must Stay Gay" Bill, Advances Through Legislature

AB 2943, a bill which may threaten the religious freedom of those who object to homosexuality, is quickly advancing through the California state legislature. Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, alerted Christians to the implications of this bill, which amends California’s “Consumer Legal Remedies Act” to include “sexual orientation change efforts.”

“For example, a simple monetary transaction – buying a book about overcoming homosexuality, or paying a counselor for help with gender confusion – would trigger AB 2943,” Daly explains. “Christian schools, churches and others who hold to a traditional understanding of marriage and sexuality would be open to lawsuits for teaching biblical truth about homosexuality or transgenderism.”

"This would apply to a 14-year-old girl who was raped by her uncle at the age of 8 and now feels repulsion towards men and attraction towards women," wrote Dr. Michael Brown regarding the controversial bill. "If her parents stood with her and she wanted to meet with a trained counselor to help to get to the root of her attractions, in some states, that would be illegal. No professional counselor or therapist or psychologist would be allowed to help her."

"Yet in these same states, if an 8-year-old girl believed she was really a boy and wanted to receive professional help to affirm her female identity, that would be perfectly legal," Brown added.
