Muslim radicals throughout Pakistan are calling for the deaths of the Supreme Court justices who acquitted Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five who sat on death row for the last eight years, of blasphemy charges this week.
Bibi was accused by Muslim women and a cleric of blasphemy and was sentenced to death by hanging. Her sentence was upheld by ruling after ruling until the three-justice panel of Pakistan's Supreme Court found her innocent for lack of sufficient evidence and "more sinned against than sinful."
As a result, supporters of Islamist political party Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) have reportedly staged street protests and blocked off major roadways, paralyzing parts of major cities like Islamabad and Lahore, according to Reuters.
At a rally in Lahore, TLP co-founder Muhammad Afzal Qadri reportedly called for the death of Supreme Court Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and the two other justices on the panel "before evening" by anyone who has "access" to them.
"They all three deserve to be killed," Qadri was quoted as saying. "Either their security should kill them, their driver kill them, or their cook kill them."
