Cake Baker Jack Phillips' Defense Of His Faith Inspired His Nephew To Become A Christian

The bravery and steadfastness of Christian baker Jack Phillips, who won his Supreme Court case in June after refusing to bake a same-sex wedding cake, has inspired thousands of believers worldwide to defend their faith. It may have come as a surprise to Jack himself, however, when the case inspired his own nephew to become a follower of Jesus.

Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado, had been penalized by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission (CCRC) for his refusal to bake a cake for a gay couple's wedding, a ruling that was overturned by the Supreme Court in defense of his First Amendment rights to free exercise of religion.

According to the legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, who represented Phillips in his SCOTUS case, his nephew, Sean, was horrified by the cruel and abusive treatment he and his family received from same-sex marriage advocates.

However, what Phillips' detractors meant for evil, God clearly meant for good, as his Uncle Jack’s calm, longsuffering response to the massive backlash compelled Sean to investigate Christianity with an open mind.

Sean “dug into the Bible to understand the comfort that Jack had in Christ and how he could withstand such hardship with grace and peace," ADF said in a statement. "And eventually, God drew Sean to Himself.”

“He is living for God and not for himself,” ADF remarked. “He is a changed man.”

“Through it all, my dad has had this unearthly peace,” Jack’s daughter Lisa said after the incredible SCOTUS ruling, which brought no end to verbal attacks against Phillips. “People call him and say such hateful things. They slander him in the news and on the radio, and he knows the whole time that it is Christ they are slandering and hating."

"He considers it an honor to be counted among those who are persecuted for Jesus’ sake, and he would willingly do it again," Lisa continued. "It’s a beautiful thing to watch and learn from: God giving him all the strength, and my dad giving God all the glory. Watching my dad’s trials undertaken for the sake of Christ has only made me want to know Christ more.”
