In June 2017, the Proverbs 31 Ministries president made the tragic announcement that she would be separating from her husband and pursuing a divorce due to unrepentant adultery and substance abuse.
Committed to her marriage covenant, TerKeurst initially decided not to divorce Art upon first learning of his affair with a woman he met online. Still, after fighting the "hardest battle" of her life to save her marriage, she shared that Art "continued to abuse substances, be unfaithful, and refused to be truthful to me and our family."
"After much prayer and consultation with wise, biblically-minded people," TerKeurst continued, "I have decided that Art has abandoned our marriage."
As if the destruction of her marriage wasn't enough, TerKeurst continued in a Job-like season of suffering as her divorce was quickly followed by a breast cancer diagnosis.
TerKeurst recalled her heart-rending journey and God's incredible provision through it all in a recent book titled It's Not Supposed to Be This Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered. As a public figure to whom many Christian women look for guidance, TerKeurst wanted to be transparent and share the darkest moments of her family's story in the light of God's mercy and grace.
Now, as 2018 comes to a close, TerKeurst is cancer-free, but that's not the only thing God sought to restore in her life.
After extensive counseling, fasting and, as she told the Christian Post in a recent interview, “keeping the lines of communication open,” she and Art rededicated their hearts and renewed their marriage vows.
Their story of redemption had its climax at the beautiful vow renewal ceremony, which took place in North Carolina, witnessed by the TerKeurst's closest family members.
