Christian Bale Thanks Satan In His Golden Globes Speech For Inspiring His Portrayal Of Dick Cheney in 'Vice'

While many a celebrity has thanked God in a speech after winning a major award, Christian Bale became among the first to thank Satan in his speech at Sunday's Golden Globes. According to Variety, Bale won the award for best actor in a musical or comedy for his portrayal of former Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice.

"Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for playing this role,” Bale said. Although his comment is arguably more political than spiritual, Bale's words still were very shocking to some.

Bale added a tongue-in-cheek comment at Vice director Adam McKay, who he said needed someone who could be "charisma-free and reviled by everybody" for the lead role.

The Dark Knight star also targeted another Republican politician as he jokingly pondered a future role role, targeting another Republican lawmaker. “What do you think, Mitch McConnell next?” he said, referring to the Senate Majority Leader.

The Church Of Satan caught wind of Bale's speech and, not surprisingly, voiced their approval in a tweet.

"To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential," the organization tweeted. "As Mr. Bale's own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting."
