Woman Loses Job, But Gets $21,5 Million Because She Refused To Work On Sundays

A woman was awarded $21.5 million last week because she declined to work on Sundays because of her faith. Her former employer did not agree with her conditions and fired her

Marie Jean Pierre worked at the Conrad hotel in Miami as a dishwasher, for almost ten years. For several years there was no conflict for Pierre since the hotel manager accommodated her requests. But in 2015, the kitchen manager George Colon did demand her to come in on Sundays and did not even allow other colleagues to trade or swap shifts anymore.

So Pierre refused, and that got her fired. “I love God,” Pierre told WTVJ-TV. “No work on Sunday, because Sunday I honor God.”

Pierre filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and that let her to the opportunity to sue the hotel. She argues in her claim that the work environment was very hostile and admonishes her because of her faith.

Last week the lawsuit took place, and the jury ordered Park Hotels & Resorts, Inc., who at the time owned the hotel, to pay Pierre an amount of $21 million on punitive damages, $36,000 in lost wages and $500,000 for emotional trauma.
