NY Passes Law Allowing Abortion At Any Stage, For Any Reason

In spite of the best efforts of every Republican, a handful of Democrats, and masses of pro-life citizens, the New York state Legislature passed the Reproductive Health Act yesterday, massively expanding legal definitions of who can receive an abortion and who can perform one, as well as doing away with the 24-week limit.

Under this new law, nearly any health care professional, including midwives and physician assistants, can perform abortions up until birth for any reason.

This marks the end of a 12-year battle during which pro-abortion advocates have tried to solidify, at the state level, the protections Roe V. Wade offers to abortionists and remove all mention of abortion from the state's criminal code.

The bill passed the Senate 38-28.

"We have a president who's made it very, very clear that he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade,"  state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said at a news conference before the vote.

"Today, here in New York, we are saying no. We are saying no, not here in New York. And we're not just saying no. We're saying that here in New York, women's health matters. We're saying here in New York, women's lives matter. We're saying here in New York, women's decisions matter."

While New York legalized abortion three years before the Roe v. Wade decision, late-term babies were still protected from illicit abortion by the state’s criminal code which made late-term abortions a felony.

The the law had previously defined homicide in the state as "conduct which causes the death of a person or an unborn child with which a female has been pregnant for more than 24 weeks."

Not only did the bill remove unborn children from the penal code, it added that "every individual has the fundamental right to choose or refuse contraception or sterilization. Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child, or to have an abortion, pursuant to this article."

Please pray for the children of New York. If the law will no longer protect them, only God can.
