Jerry Falwell Jr: Trump Is Like King David

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jnr. has made no excuses for his relentless support for Donald Trump, continuously seeking to prove to voters that Trump's Christian faith is legitimate and active in his politics. This week, however, Falwell took his praise a little further, comparing Trump to King David:

"God called King David a man after God’s own heart even though he was an adulterer and a murderer. You have to choose the leader that would make the best king or president and not necessarily someone who would be a good pastor. We’re not voting for pastor-in-chief," he said, reports Time magazine. The difference, perhaps, between Trump and King David, is that the latter was humble to repent of his grievous sins when he was confronted by the prophet Nathan. Trump, however, has previously said he does not need God's forgiveness.

Rabbi David Wolpe at Time magazine suggests alternative biblical comparisons that may be more accurate for the presidential hopeful. Falwell "might have cited King Rehoboam (I Kings, ch. 12)," writes Wolpe. "He too was a king of Israel. King Rehoboam incited a division in the nation that was never healed."
