5 Bible Verses To Help You DEFEAT Shame Today

Shame is an awful thing. We have all felt it. You may have done something you wish you hadn't, you feel immediate regret, and this quickly morphs into an overwhelming and dreadful concoction of embarrassment, unworthiness, and despair. Here are 5 Bible verses that will help you to defeat shame.

1. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." - 1 John 1:9
Though we fall short, we must be bold to run straight back to him after we have sinned. Just watched porn? Know that He WILL forgive you, just as he has promised. Knowing that will set you free from lasting shame that is so unhealthy. Don't wallow in self-pity or delve deeper into your shame - it will only lead you back to the porn site. Pick your head up and move forward with God.

2. "But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame." - Isaiah 50:7
You might feel like there is no end to the dark cloud of shame that is circling above your head, but God has other plans for you. Perhaps someone else has shamed you for getting drunk the other night. Don't receive their harmful comments. God has plans for new hope and a renewed mind. Trust him to lead you out.

3. "To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame." - Psalm 22:5
God will not put you to shame. Even if you feel He will, when your life is falling apart. Perhaps you have just lost a loved one, and you feel all alone, and abandoned. Remember: God will never let you go. He will uphold you by his right hand. Whatever has been done to you, whatever tragedy has unfolded, or whatever shame you may be carrying, if you trust in God, and give over your struggles to him, he is trustworthy and will never forsake you. Learn to see yourself as a new creation, perfect and holy in His sight.

4. "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." - James 5:16
God has blessed us with a life-giving and life-saving community, the Church. Allow others to help you get free from shame. Confess the fact you have spent the last week lying to those close to you, entrust your darkest moments to other Christians, and let them pray for you. This will change everything, because by prayer and petition your shame is brought into the light. And in the light of God, shame is put to death.

5. "Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion; instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot; therefore in their land, they shall possess a double portion; they shall have everlasting joy." - Isaiah 6:17
Shame is a profound work of the enemy. It comes to steal away and rob you of life. But remember, God has promised us an eternal inheritance, and no sin nor shame can snatch that away from us. Do not allow others to shame you. There is a big difference between someone challenging you about sleeping with your boyfriend or girlfriend, and just flat out shaming you. Jesus is waiting for you to turn to him. When you mess up, He is slow to anger and rich in love. With his grace at the centre of your life, the destination is joy, not shame. He will exchange sorrow for dancing, and will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

Keep trusting in Him, who is able to defeat your shame for good. When it creeps up on you and threatens you in the dark nights, rebuke it fiercely, and speak these words of life over your soul: "I am His, and He is mine." This is true now and for eternity, and shame will never overcome you!
