In certain Christian circles resistance against the evolution theory has been unwavering. It has attempted to debunk the theory by proving it incompatible with the Biblical account of creation and by searching for alternative scientific theories that might explain the existence and diversity of life. Christians who engage in this sort of activity are called creationists. With that term they indicate that creation was not the result of a natural development but an act of a divine being, the God of the Bible. They are not simply theologians because they go beyond theology in exploring questions of a scientific nature.
Here are some of the most tried and trusted arguments against the evolution theory that Christians have traditionally come up with. Most are more theological in nature, others look more at the lack of scientific evidence.
1. Creation was Not a Natural Process
First and foremost, many Christians consider the evolution theory to be incompatible with the Biblical text. The Bible being the Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and affirmed by Christ to have a divine origin, is considered the norm of all Christian teaching and practice, whether this pertains to daily life, vocation, ethics, or, indeed, science.
The evolution theory suggests that a natural process is responsible for life on earth, but the Bible clearly says that God called creation forth, from sun and moon to mammals and human beings: "God said, 'Let the water swarm with swarms of living creatures and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.' God created the great sea creatures and every living and moving thing with which the water swarmed, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good" (Genesis 1:20-21). So there can be no natural process that leaves God out of the picture.
God’s direct word is responsible ("And God said...") for life on earth. The Bible confirms this. So if scientist suggest that no divine intervention, i.e. no direct word from God, brought forth life, they go against the written word of God and their theories need to be rejected.
2. Not millions of Years but six days
If the Bible is God’s direct word to us, the human race, than we need to give it great importance. As such God’s word, is to be taken literally. We can’t just fly off into free speculation in order to make Scripture say what we want; the biblical text has the first place.
This is pretty important for the biblical idea of creation. In the creation account in the Genesis 1 God creates the cosmos, the earth, and all life in six days. There are people who try to manipulate that term and stretch it into thousands or even millions of years, but ultimately this does violence to the text of the Bible. Moreover, these days do not gradually morph into each other; it is day, it is night, and a new day begins with a new event: "God blessed them and said, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.' There was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day" (Genesis 1:22-23).
Thus God performs distinctive acts on each following day. So, when the Bible speaks of 6 literal days we need to take that seriously. The evolution theory is therefore ruled out. Six days is six days!
3. Scripture Has the First Word not Some Human Theory
This leads us to an important consideration. Scripture, as God’s word, has the priority. It is God’s special revelation. Christians consider the world God’s revelation as well (see Psalm 8), but they call that natural revelation. In order to understand the book of nature well we need to “read” it through the spectacles of the book with special revelation, the Bible. The Bible, then, is normative for what we can possibly say about the world.
Scientist can come up with so many theories. Ultimately, they are just theories. If those theories do not align with a plain reading of the Scriptures, they have to be discarded. So it is with the evolution theory. It is just a theory; no matter how much people try to make it look like it is the truth. The evolution theory provides a reading of the world that is in obvious conflict with God’s special revelation, the Bible. Those scientists read the book of natural revelation in the wrong way because they do not listen to the book with special revelation (cf. Romans 1:18-28).
4. Death is a Punishment For Sin
Another important reason why Christians should not accept the evolution theory has to do with the fact that the evolution theory implies that life evolved over millions of years which in turn means that countless zillions of created individuals died in the process.
There is no evolution without death, because the evolutionary process proceeds very slowly. This flies in the face of the fact that death was simply not a thing when God created heaven and earth. Rather, God warned Adam and Eve that if they wouldn’t obey God’s command not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they would die: “…you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:17). Death, then, is a punishment for sin rather than part of the cycle of life.
How could we possibly accept the evolution theory that sees death as one of its main mechanisms when the Bible teaches that death is the wages of sin (Romans 6:23) and that through Adam death spread through the entire human race (Romans 5:18)? See also: Hebrews 2:14; Gen 3:19.
5. Adam and Eve are actual historical persons and the first humans
According to the evolution theory, humanity evolved as a large group from human ancestors (called hominids and hominoids, so-called pre-humans). It is impossible for evolutionists to think of just two human prototypes from which humanity came forth. And that very observation is a big problem for many Christians, because it leads to the question: where is the first sin? It is not that Christians cherish this sin in any particular way. Oh, how they wish it never happened. Rather it was the most dreadful dead in the history of humanity.
Adam and Eve are actual historical persons. They are are also the first humans to roam the earth because God created them. They committed the one sin that plunged humanity in sin and death when they ate the forbidden fruit (see Genesis 3:1-15). With the evolution theory we lose this momentous event for Adam and Eve are not historical persons. There is no first sin and with it there is no fall of the human race into sin, something the Bible clearly teaches. The evolution theory eradicates sin. And with this eradication sin also erases the need for salvation.
In other words, the evolution theory is directly linked to the person of Christ. With the evolution theory Christ becomes meaningless and unnecessary for there is no sin, but just an evolved humanity. Since Christians confess Christ as Lord and Savior, evolution has to be rejected with the strongest possible words as an attempt to make the work of Christ redundant and unnecessary.
6. Evidence Against the Evolution Theory
The evolution theory is scientifically flawed. Carbon dating (a way to determine the age of an object by measuring the reduction in radio-active radiation of an object over time) has often proved to be unreliable, placing fossils in time periods that are totally wrong. Moreover, layers of sediment that according to evolutionists are separated from each other by millions of years, are at times found with objects (fossilized trees for instance) occupying more than one layer at the same time.
Did the tree stump get stuck in one layer and wait for millions of years to get stuck in the next? Not likely. There have also been a couple of bogus finds of important humanoid fossils, human attempts at fraud, which tried to provide false support for the evolution theory. Once exposed they only contributed to the evolution theory's unreliability.
Christians who reject the evolution theory have made serious attempts to come up with alternative scientific theories. These creationists do not all agree on the particulars of their theories but are united in their objection against the evolution theory and committed to finding concepts and ideas that attempt to explain in scientific terms how the biblical account may in fact have taken place.
