Demi Lovato Celebrates Freedom From Drugs "I Couldn't Have Done It Without God"

Mar 17, 2017 by Will Maule

Singer Demi Lovato may be a superstar with millions following her every move, but she has known what it means to be at rock bottom. Back when she was 19, the now-24 year old said she was hooked on cocaine. "I couldn't go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there," she told Access Hollywood.

But now, Lovato is celebrating her complete freedom from drug abuse, and is thanking God for helping her defeat her habit. "So grateful. It's been quite the journey. So many ups and downs," she wrote on Instagram, sharing a picture of the 12 Steps programme, stating that she has been sober for 5 whole years.

Demi went into LA rehab 'Cast Centre' when she was 19. She was so impressed by the treatment programme that she is now a co-owner in the business, and brings the CEO on tour with her to discuss issues of addiction publicly with her fans. "How many 24-year-olds do you know that own their own treatment centre? It's incredible. But then to leverage and use their platform in pop culture to do such good is just incredible," says Lovato's manager Phil MacIntryre.

"So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession," Lovato continues. "I'm so proud of myself but I couldn't have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me."
