ISIS Gunmen Open Fire At Moses 'Burning Bush' Holy Site In Egypt

Apr 19, 2017 by Will Maule

ISIS gunmen have opened fire on an Egyptian police checkpoint near the St. Catherine's monatery, killing one and wounding four others, reports Pravmir. The gunmen were shooting from an elevated hilltop overlooking the police checkpoint just outside the monastery, which is located in a remote desert and mountainous area in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula. This is where, according to scripture, God spoke to the prophet Moses from a burning bush.

Only monks and clergy were inside the monastery at the time, as the site has been closed to the public since 2015 due to security concerns. The compound is very heavily fortified and guarded by armed security forces. After the initial fire exchange, the gunmen retreated.
