UAE Rename Major Islamic Mosque 'Mary, Mother Of Jesus' In Show Of Religious Tolerance

The United Arab Emirates have renamed one of its major Islamic centres 'Mary, Mother of Jesus' in what authorities are calling a show of religious tolerance. Christians have praised the renaming of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Mosque in a country that still has an extremely high level of Christian persecution, according to The Khaleej Times.

"The UAE sets a real example of tolerance, which transcends ideas and slogans to become a practical reality and reaching the stage of social harmony," says The Rev. Ibrahim Farouk, patron of the Pope Tawadros Christian Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt in Abu Dhabi. "Using the name of 'Mother Mary' on this mosque is a gesture of love and peace that we hope will be followed around the world."

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces reportedly decided to change the name with a hope to "consolidate bonds of humanity between followers of different religions."
