Rev. Shannon Kershner

Presbyterian Megachurch Leader Says 'God Is Not A Christian'

Oct 09, 2017 by Will Maule

The leader of the second largest congregation in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Rev. Shannon Johnson Kershner has proclaimed that Christianity is not the only way to heaven. Appearing on a new podcast with the Chicago-Sun-Times, Kershner was directly asked: "Is Christianity the only way to heaven?"

"No," she replied. "God's not a Christian. I mean, we are ... For me, the Christian tradition is the way to understand God and my relationship with the world and other humans and it's the way for me to move into that relationship but I'm not about to say what God can and cannot do in other ways and with other spiritual experiences," she explained.

Kersher has previously spoken out against Donald Trump, particularly when the 'hot mic' tapes came to light. “I spoke out fairly candidly — after the ‘Access Hollywood‘ tapes were released — about my real disappointment and anger about that environment being what my teenage daughter’s growing up in.And, as a woman, I think, and, as a church, we need to say no to that kind of dehumanization and misogyny that was represented on those tapes," she said.

"So I think that that was hard for some folks to hear, but I wouldn’t change it.”
